The Ford Theatre Foundation's Latino Arts Initiative (LAI) is a major new effort to boost Latino participation in Ford programs. Begun in 2002 and initially funded by a 3-year grant from the James Irvine Foundation, the LAI is pursuing outreach and marketing activities to increase Latino participation both onstage and in the audience at the Ford. The initiative also aims to grow the field for Latino producers and performing arts presenters.

As a result of the Latino Arts Initiative, the number and variety of evening and family performances rooted in Latino culture taking place at the Ford are increasing. LAI staff is also developing a number of outreach programs and strategies designed to strengthen ties between the Ford and Latino neighborhoods and organizations in Los Angeles. The Ford has established strong relationships with local Latino performing arts presenters. As part of the initiative, the Ford has also expanded the number of its Spanish-speaking front-of-house and box office staff to enhance the entire theater-going experience of the Latino audience.
